CIVICS SYLLABUS
Civics is the study of the rights, duties, privileges, and the responsibilities of being a U.S. citizen. During the year we will cover the following general topics:
1. The study of patriotism and patriotic symbols.
2. The study of citizenship and how it is gained or lost.
3. The Declaration of Independence and its influence on our government.
4. The Constitutional Convention and the Constitution of the U.S. including the Bill of Rights and the amendments
5. The three branches of government
A. The legistative branch--Congress (House and Senate)
B. The executive branch--President and Vice President
C. The judicial branch--The Supreme Court and court decisions
6. Oklahoma state government, including the Oklahoma constitution and Tulsa city government, including city ordinances.
7. Political parties and the Presidential election process.
GRADES: The grading scale is the traditional Union Public Schools recommended guideline: A=90-100. B=80-89. C=70-79. D=60-69. F=Below 60. Grades are derived from homework, quizes, vocabulary, chapter tests, and projects.
MAKEUP WORK: Make up work is the responsibility of the student. Check the student handbook for details. Work assigned before a student is absent is due the day he returns. Work not turned in on time will be penalized and could also lead to a zero for that assignment.
NEWSPAPERS: During the year we work with current events and political cartoons. I is very helpful if the student has access to a daily newspaper and monitors the radio and TV programs.

SUPPLIES: Each student will need a small 3-ring binder, loose leaf notebook paper and a gluestick may be needed.
